This calcite comes from the famous Challenger Cave system in Nuevo León, Mexico, a location long admired by fluorescent-mineral collectors. The mine is closed, so material now comes from older collections and is increasingly hard to find.

The crystals from this locality are known for exceptional clarity and clean cleavage faces. Many pieces look like ice under normal light. Colors range from colorless to light pink, and rare pieces may show a green tone.

Under UV light, this calcite is known worldwide for its strong, multi-wavelength reaction.
Shortwave UV gives a bright blue to blue-violet glow.
Midwave UV often produces yellow, peach, or white.
Longwave UV shows pink or orange-pink.
After the UV light shuts off, the piece continues to glow with a strong blue phosphorescence that can last several seconds. Some specimens show fluorescent zoning inside the crystal, giving extra visual appeal when viewed under UV.

Collectors consider Challenger Cave calcite a classic “Terlingua-type” calcite and often prefer its response over the original Texas material.
